Fast bowler Mohammad Rameez has recently made his name as the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2009-2010 Qaid-e-Azam Trophy for Rawalpindi with 70 victims at an incredible average of 18. He managed all this while aged just 19! He claimed eight wickets in an innings twice and is now in line for a call-up to Pakistan's England Test tour in July and August. He wants to emulate his cricket hero Waqar Younis in having a long and fruitful career with Pakistan.
How did you become interested in cricket?
I have been interested in Cricket from my childhood,i always liked watching cricket matches. No one in my family played cricket.
Who were your cricket heroes?
Waqar Younis and Imran Khan
Who is the best batsman you have bowled to so far in your short career, and why do you think he was so good?
Hasan Raza. He is a good batsman in domestic cricket in Pakistan.
You have already taken eight wickets in an innings twice this season. Can you tell us about these performances and why you did so well?
It was against Multan and Peshawar. Bowling conditions were good for me as the ball was swinging and I always like to think that I am a threat when the ball is swinging. In these games I just took advantage.
What can you tell us about your bowling? How quick are you and are you a swinger of the ball more than a cutter, or both?
I am a good out-swinger, and usually I bowl at about 130 to 136 kph.
Which other bowler in the world would you compare yourself to?
I am inspired by Waqar Younis, the great Pakistan fast bowler and I want to be a good bowler like he was. Whether I am like him or can become like him is probably for others to judge.
Who are the biggest influences on your career and why?
There have been lots of people who helped me to improve my cricket skills. Aashiq Hussain, my club coach, really worked hard on me, he has always encouraged me. Sabih Azhar, the Rawalpindi coach, has also been helpful to me. And of course Mudassar Nazar has been an inspiration and has encouraged me to become a good cricketer.
What are you looking forward to most in your long cricket career ahead?
I just want to be a very good cricketer and Inshallah, I have confidence in myself that I will play for my country .
Do you watch much cricket when you are not playing?
It depends, I watch movies and listen to songs more when I am not playing but yes I do follow international cricket.
What other sports do you like or watch or play?
I like to watch and play football.
Finally, when Mohammad Rameez retires from cricket when he is 38, maybe, what do you want to have achieved by then?
I am not too sure if I will ever lose my love and passion for cricket at any time, but when I do retire from cricket I want to be known as one of the finest players in cricket history. I want to be known for my good performances and achieving great things in this game.
