Sanath Jayasuriya will not be joining Warwickshire for the Twenty20 Cup in June after the club learned he will instead continue his international career with Sri Lanka.
Left-handed opener and left-arm spinner Jayasuriya had announced his retirement from all international cricket and signed for the Bears for the tournament.
However, the club said it was reported on Wednesday that Jayasuriya has been named in the Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup, which is due to be held in Pakistan during the domestic Twenty20 period and this means he will be unable to honour his contract with the club.
“The news regarding Sanath comes out of the blue and is disappointing especially given his recent form in the IPL,” Warwickshire Director of Cricket Ashley Giles said.
“We will now look to see who might be a suitable replacement for this exciting competition.”
