Younis leads Pakistan to 3-0 sweep; Gayle's 122 in vain
Nov 16, 2008 |

Younis Khan stroked his sixth one-day international century to set up a 31-run victory for Pakistan on Sunday and a 3-0 series sweep over West Indies in Abu Dhabi.

Chris Gayle hammered 122 from 137 balls for his second hundred of the series but like the first instance it was in a losing cause.

Ramnaresh Sarwan (62) added 151 with his captain but once their stand was broken, West Indies’ batting gradually disintegrated, due in no small part to accurate seamers Rao Iftikhar Anjum (4-59) and Umar Gul (3-31).

Younis (101) came to the wicket for the second ball of the match after Salman Butt was caught off Daren Powell’s first delivery. Pakistan went on to plunder 273-6 as Misbah-ul-Haq also weighed in with an unbeaten 79, putting on 103 with Younis.

It was an impressive series result for Pakistan, whose players have been starved of competitive cricket for four months. Half of the West Indies side had featured in the Stanford Super Series that was preceded by a six-week raining camp.

The teams were slated to meet in a hastily-arranged two-match Test series now but the two boards could not agree on the financial implications.
